Day 1: Arrival and Coffee Street Exploration

Upon arriving, the first stop should undoubtedly be the renowned Anmok Coffee Street. This area is lined with numerous cafés, each with its unique vibe. Some popular choices include:

  • Terarosa Coffee – Known for its expertly brewed coffee and inviting atmosphere, a must-visit.
  • Hollys Coffee – This chain offers a familiar menu, perfect for a quick, comfortable stop.
  • Gongju Coffee – A smaller café that serves unique blends and has a cozy feel.

Most cafés offer views of the beach, making your coffee experience even more enjoyable. Prices here typically range from 4,000 to 7,000 won ($3 to $6) for a cup, which is quite reasonable considering the quality.

Lunch at Anmok Beach

After your coffee adventure, it’s time for lunch. There are plenty of options close by, with seafood being a highlight in this coastal city. Consider trying:

  • Chodang Sundubu – Famous for its soft tofu soup, this restaurant offers a warm, comforting meal.
  • Grilled Mackerel Spot – A small eatery known for its fresh grilled fish and simple sides.

Expect to pay around 8,000 to 12,000 won ($6 to $10) for a meal. Dining here not only satisfies your hunger but also immerses you in local flavours.

Afternoon Stroll and Beach Time

Spend your afternoon walking along the beach or lounging by the shore. The atmosphere is relaxed, perfect for unwinding after a busy week. Anmok Beach is less crowded than other popular beaches, providing a peaceful experience. Just remember to check the weather beforehand, as rainy days can affect your plans.

Evening Café Hopping

As the sun begins to set, venture back to Coffee Street for more exploration. Each café has its evening charm, and you might discover new specialties to try. One interesting spot is:

  • Yuriga – This café has a unique selection of desserts that pair beautifully with coffee.

After enjoying your second cup of the day, consider taking a stroll along the beach at dusk. The views are simply stunning, and it’s a perfect way to end your first day.

On your second day, take advantage of the local attractions. Start with a visit to the Ojukheon House, the birthplace of the famous Confucian scholar Yulgok. Entry fees are approximately 3,000 won ($2.50), and the site is rich in history and culture. It’s a peaceful spot to explore and frame your understanding of Korean heritage.

Lunch at a Local Market

For lunch, head to one of the local markets like Gangneung Jungang Market. Here, you can find a selection of street food.

  • Try the hotteok (sweet pancakes) for about 1,500 won ($1.25).
  • Sample tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) for roughly 2,500 won ($2).

This will give you a taste of the local cuisine, all while being surrounded by the lively market atmosphere.
